DSFL 6 Week 6 Recap

The 1990’s Dallas Cowboys finish the week with the best record in the DSFL.

Deion Sanders picked off three Carson Palmer passes (which ties a DSFL franchise single-game record) during the Monday night beatdown of Arizona.

Unlike the Monday night game, most of week 6 featured games that came down to the final possession. This was one of the most riveting week of games seen this season.

Here’s a recap at two of the best games from week 6 action:

2000’s Rams kicker Jeff Wilkins (#14) kicks the game-winning field goal in the week 6 thriller at San Francisco.

San Francisco, CA - Kurt Warner vs Joe Montana. The matchup between two of the league’s heavyweights didn’t disappoint. The quarterbacks combined for over 600 yards and two touchdowns in a see-saw battle in the NFC West. Joe Montana led the 49ers on back-to-back scoring drives in the 4th quarter to tie the game. Then after both teams went 3-and-out, Kurt Warner drives the Rams 59 yards in 7 plays to set up Jeff Wilkins for the game-winning field goal. The quarterbacks were great and played their best in this important division game which could become a deciding factor in playoff seeding later on.

From 1999-2001, St. Louis was the “Greatest Show on Turf”. The Rams led the NFL in offense for 3 consecutive seasons and broke countless records throughout their run in the 2000’s. So it may come to no surprise that Kurt Warner leads the DSFL 6 in passing and the team ranks within the top 5 in points. But the success of this team also has a direct link to Hall of Fame tailback Marshall Faulk. In week 6 against the 1980’s 49ers, Faulk racks up 132 yards from scrimmage and scores 3 rushing touchdowns for the second week in a row. He was the team’s heart and soul during their run as the “Greatest Show on Turf”. That run featured 2 trips to the Super Bowl and a world championship in 1999. He has also been the heart and soul of this club in the DSFL 6. The DSFL Rams have won 3 straight games.

Thurman Thomas (#34) of the 1990’s Buffalo Bills scores the game-winning touchdown to cap off their Thursday night win against Kansas City.

Buffalo, NY - 1990’s Bills quarterback Jim Kelly died of cancer just over one year ago. His legacy as undoubtedly the greatest and most productive quarterback in franchise history will live on for years to come. He helped turn around a fledgling organization into the 4-time AFC champions that led the NFL in offense and points during their best years together. The Bills never won the Super Bowl during the 1990’s, but the team will still be remembered as one of the NFL’s greatest dynasties, led by Jim Kelly.

Against the high-powered 2010’s Kansas City Chiefs, Jim Kelly torched the DSFL’s 27th ranked pass defense for 298 yards and 2 touchdowns in week 6. But it was a late 4th quarter interception to the Chiefs’ Marcus Peters with 1:40 remaining in the game that appeared to have been the game-deciding play. Chiefs take a 28-27 lead. After his only mistake of the night, Jim Kelly completes every pass throughout the game-winning drive, capped by an 8 yard touchdown run from tailback Thurman Thomas. The 1990’s Bills win their 2nd-straight game, 33-28.

On the other side of Jim Kelly’s heroic performance are the 2010’s Kansas City Chiefs. The team’s defense is reeling. Kansas City allowed 342 yards and 5 touchdown passes from Ken Stabler and the Raiders last week, then give up 347 yards and the game-winning Thurman Thomas touchdown this week. Unless this team can figure out its defensive weaknesses, this team may relinquish its 1st place spot in the AFC West.

Other Week 6 Notables:

2000’s Titans DE Kevin Carter (#93) sacks George Blanda four times during the teams 27-10 home win over Houston. The Titans (4-2) share the AFC South lead with Indianapolis.

In week 6 against Chicago, 2010’s Panthers QB Cam Newton became the first player in DSFL history to throw 5 interceptions in a game. The 1940’s Bears won the game, 23-7.
