DSFL 6 Week 5 Recap
The 1960’s Chargers knock New Orleans off the rank of unbeatens
The 2010’s Saints will go down as the last team standing in the DSFL 6. On Monday night, the 1960’s Chargers rally from down 10 points in the 2nd half to deliver New Orleans their first loss of the season.
Here’s a recap at the marquee games from week 5 action:
John Hadl and Chargers WR Lance Alworth (#19) have proven to be the most dangerous passing tandem in the DSFL 6. With another 2 touchdowns together in week 5, Hadl and Alworth help hand New Orleans their first loss of the season in week 5.
60’s Chargers 24, 10’s Saints 20
New Orleans, LA - The Chargers led the NFL in offense during their two title runs in the 1960’s. Those championship seasons were led by three different quarterbacks: Jack Kemp, Tobin Rote, and John Hadl. Despite the constant influx of passers, San Diego’s dynasty featured this overwhelming offense largely because of two people: Sid Gillman, the head coach, and Lance Alworth, the only Hall of Famer on the 1960’s dynasty Chargers.
Down 20-10 late in the 3rd quarter, San Diego’s hall of fame wide receiver dominates the game and wills the Chargers back with two touchdown grabs in the 2nd half. Then almost half of the team’s 18 first downs were gained in the 4th quarter to preserve the lead and hand New Orleans its first loss of the season.
With the win, the 1960’s Chargers (2-3) remain way behind the 2010’s Chiefs in the AFC West but can make up some ground if they can beat the 1960’s Jets (2-3) at home. Meanwhile, the 2010’s Saints (4-1) will have a bye week to sort things out before they play host to division rival 2010’s Carolina (4-1) in week 7.
1940’s Bears win their first game of the season in a week 5 battle against 2000’s Tampa Bay.
40’s Bears 17, 00’s Buccaneers 14
Chicago, IL - The 1940’s Bears lost their first four games by a combined 65 points. Their lowest moment this season was a humiliating 41-17 defeat to the hands of 2000’s Indianapolis at home. In that game, the team allowed 391 yards of offense, the most by the DSFL Bears since the league’s first season when the 1985 version turned around a slow start en route to a birth in the Dream Bowl 1.
Defense was no problem on Thursday night against Tampa Bay in week 5. The 2000’s Buccaneers were held to 4-of-12 conversions on third down and missed their last fourth down attempt with under two minutes remaining in regulation. Bears CB Hal Lahar (in picture above) broke up the fourth down pass to secure Chicago’s first win of the season.
The 1940’s Bears (1-4) play 2010’s Carolina (4-1) and 2000’s St. Louis (2-3) for their two-game road trip, one that may dictate whether this team has a playoff chance in the DSFL 6. The 2000’s Buccaneers have their 3 game win streak snapped and attempt to rebound against 1960’s Green Bay (1-3) next Sunday.
